Comparing Template Rendering Architectures in Flask and Django Frameworks

Flask Implementation Strategy

To begin server-side rendering with Flask, establish a project directory containing a templates folder. The application logic resides in a main script where the app instance is defined.

Configuration and View Logic

Import the rendering engine from the framework and define the route handler. This function accepts URL parameters and passes them alongside static context data to the template engine.

from flask import Flask, render_template

app = Flask(__name__
)

@app.route('/data/<identifier>')
def display(identifier):
    return render_template('report.html', record_id=identifier, owner="DevTeam")

if __name__ == '__main__':
    app.run(debug=True)

Template Syntax

The HTML file located within the templates directory uses Jinja2 syntax to interpolate variables provided by the view.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <title>Data Report</title>
</head>
<body>
    <h1>Source: {{ owner }}</h1>
    <p>Tracking ID: {{ record_id }}</p>
</body>
</html>

Django Implementation Strategy

Django follows a model-view-template structure reqiuring more configuration regarding apps and settings management.

Project Setup

Initialize the application module using the management script:

python manage.py startapp core_app

Settings Configuration

Modify the project's settings.py to include the new application in INSTALLED_APPS. Define the template loaders to locate files within the app's subdirectory.

INSTALLED_APPS = [
    'django.contrib.admin',
    'core_app',
]

TEMPLATES = [
    {
        'BACKEND': 'django.template.backends.django.DjangoTemplates',
        'DIRS': [os.path.join(BASE_DIR, 'core_app/templates')],
        'APP_DIRS': True,
    },
]

Views and Routing

Create a view function in views.py using the render shortcut to inject context.

from django.shortcuts import render

def dashboard(request):
    return render(request, 'index.html', {'status': 'Online', 'version': '2.0'})

Ensure the index.html file exists inside core_app/templates/. Configure URL routing at both the project level (urls.py) and the application level (core_app/urls.py) to map the HTTP path to the view function.

Once configured, launch the development server to verify that the template renders correctly with the passed arguments.
