Troubleshooting AD FS Artifact Storage Connection Errors (MSIS3115)

An error event, MSIS3115, indicates that Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) cannot establish a connection to the ArtifactStorage database. The detailed error message often includes:

Project expiration failed.

Other data
Exception message:
MSIS3115: Unable to connect to the ArtifactStorage in the configuration database.

User action
Ensure that the project storage server is configured correctly. Troubleshoot network connectivity to the project storage server.

To resolve this isue, follow these steps:

  1. Open PowerShell as an administrator and execute the following command to view current AD FS properties:

    Get-AdfsProperties

  2. Examine the output, specifically the ArtifactDbConnection property. You might find an IP address configured as the data source, for example:

    ArtifactDbConnection : Data Source=10.1.100.12;Initial Catalog=AdfsArtifactStore;Integrated Security=True;Min Pool Size=20

  3. AD FS requires a hostname or fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the database server, not a IP address. Update the connection string using the hostname or FQDN. For instance, if your AD FS server is named ADFSSERVER, use the following command:

    Set-AdfsProperties -ArtifactDbConnection "Data Source=ADFSSERVER;Initial Catalog=AdfsArtifactStore;Integrated Security=True;Min Pool Size=20"

Replace ADFSSERVER with the actual hostname or FQDN of your database server.

  4. After runnning the command, you will be prompted to restart the AD FS service. Perform the restart.

The MSIS3115 error should now be resolved.
