Configuring OpenCV for Android Development

Adding OpenCV to Android Projects

To integraet OpenCV into Android applications using Java, follow these setup steps:

Prerequisites

  • Android Studio (latest stable version)
  • OpenCV Android SDK (version 3.2 or compatiblle)

SDK Integration Process

Download the OpenCV Android SDK from the official releases page. Extract the package and locate the Java module within the SDK directory structure.

In Android Studio, import the OpenCV Java module via File → New → Import Module. Navigate to the Java folder in the extracted SDK and complete the import wizard.

Build Configuration

Synchronize the module settings between your application and the imported OpenCV library. Compare the build.gradle files for both modules, ensuring compatibility in:

  • Compile SDK version
  • Minimum SDK version
  • Target SDK version
  • Build tools version

Copy the native library files (.so) from the OpenCV SDK's libs directory to your project's app/src/main/jniLibs folder.

Gradle Script Modifications

Add the following configuration to your app-level build.gradle:

dependencies {
    implementation fileTree(dir: "$buildDir/native-libs", include: 'native-libs.jar')
}

task packageNativeLibs(type: Jar) {
    destinationDirectory = file("$buildDir/native-libs")
    archiveBaseName = 'native-libs'
    from fileTree(dir: 'src/main/jniLibs', include: '**/*.so')
    into 'lib/'
}

tasks.withType(JavaCompile) {
    compileTask -> compileTask.dependsOn(packageNativeLibs)
}

Verification

After completing the configuration, rebuild your project. The OpenCV Java library should now be available for import and use within your Android application code.
